My first continent beyond North America was Asia. This happened during a summer vacation with my parents to visit my brother and his family who at the time were living in Okinawa, Japan. This set the seed for what would become a passion of mine. About a decade later, I decided to study abroad in Singapore for 6 months. While living there I also visited Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macau, and Cambodia.
If you are looking for a place with immense culture, food, and budget friendly this is definitely it. Coming here definitely
took me out of my comfort zone especially living here for 6 months. However, you can without a doubt make this into a 2 week trip. When I visit places, especially if I don’t have a lot of time, I do like to go to the touristy spots. They are tourist attractions for a reason! Here are some of the highlight from trip:
Patronas Towers is definiely a must see. Get some great selfies there. Next you can head to the Bantu Caves, be careful of the monkeys! they are very sneaky, but a very cool experience. Have a cocunut while you are there. Before you leave grab a souvenier at one of Maylaysi’s many street markets. If you want to sharpen your negotiation skills this is the place to do it! Never settle for the first price given.
Angkor Wat! You must see it. One of the 7 wonders of the world, it feels like you are stepping back in time. There is something haunting about particular parts of this place. Go right before sunrise, the views are nothing less than breathtaking. Also there are MANY children here. when there we brought candy and other things to distribute.
Finish off your trip with some relaxation in Thailand. THere are so many little islands to choose from I went to Phuket, & Ko Phi Phi. These palces has everything to choose from from extreeme relaxation to extreme partying. Also it is great fro every budget. You can an order of authentic pad thai for $4 from the street vendor. I also urge you to try the exotic delicasies from these vendors. I tried a cricket, which actually wasnt so bad. It had the flavor of BBQ chips.
